Sixtysix —Issue 01

Welcome to the Craft of Creativity. Sixtysix is a new magazine that brings together interesting people from the design, creativity and luxury world with powerful storytelling and stunning imagery. While the magazine’s title is unconventional, Sixtysix is a twisting and turning experience of the craft behind the products, people and places that shape the world around us—much like the S in the logo.

Print

Sixtysix is published twice a year and distributed around the world with covers featuring the expressive works of the best creatives. With a spine nearly an inch thick, each issue is printed on varied paper stock—80 lb uncoated stock and glossy with 200+ pages of full-bleed imagery and stories. The content and design of the book bridge the intersection of photography, design and editorial.

Art Direction and Typography

Each feature spread features a lush portrait of the subject, shot in their studio by renowned photographers from the likes of Chantal Anderson, Winnie Au, Max B. Photo, Elodie Daguin, Daniel Dorsa, Ana Hop, Noah Kalina and Ye Rin Mok in locations like Los Angeles, Mexico City, New York, Paris and Tokyo.

Lifestyle and documentary style photography, shot in digital and analog, is often layered with lens flares and blurs that help evoke authentic moments of the subject and their space.

With studio photography, objects look graphic and sculptural with the common use of warm lighting and long shadows to help editorialize well-designed products.

The typographic identity takes inspiration from Swiss design, while being selective with scale and type bends. Colorways come together to convey a sense of playfulness and cohesion in unison with photography.

Featured Stories

Each feature in the magazine’s story well is focused on a design icon and creative influencer. Their interview often takes us along on authentic story about their creative process and what their path to success has looked like.

Notable subjects include larger-than-life industrial designers Philippe Starck and Yves Behar, along with tastemakers Dominic Ciambrone, Nicole McLaughlin and Ronan Bourellec as well as rising stars Mr. Flower Fantastic, Heidi Gardner of SNL and musician Michelle Zauner.

The first part of the book aims to report on new products from the eye of a designer, carefully curating the most meaningful, important, and beautiful new pieces on the market. Product coverage is broad but has a focus on interior furnishings, workplace, home decor, watches, cars & motorcycles and luxury items designed to last. Some editorial product partners include Rolex, Arnold and Son, Gucci, Porshe and Kento.

Brand Partnerships

Studio Sixtysix is the in-house creative agency for Sixtysix. The Studio uses an omni-channel content strategy approach and exclusive collaborations in each issue to produce authentic custom projects that offer value, inspiration and education to an engaged audience. Clients include Brizo, Bose, Harley-Davidson, Le Creuset, Rejuvenation, Vicostone and Wolf Appliances.

Website Design

Using the brand’s identity elements, I used the same type and iconography as the print edition translated into digital, along with a distinct color palette to express the same experience you have when holding the magazine or looking at it through a screen.

As a part of the site architecture, we built and deployed a simple to use, menu categories that parallel the magazine’s departments. The result is a simple way to curate content so content creators are free to curate and connect new and archived stories together making clickstream into a tangible end user conversion.

The publication is available for purchase at select bookstores worldwide, along with an e-commerce experience through Shopify that guides customers through the process of subscribing or buying a single issue.
